Prayer and God’s Word

Last week a dear brother shared with me how much a new practice for him of praying God’s word had really strengthened him as he had recently lost his job.  I was encouraged and wanted to encourage others to do this very thing- pray God’s word. Paul commands us to do this in Ephesians 6:17-18 where he describes our life as a spiritual battle- a battle for faith. To survive this battle we must ready ourselves with the armor of Christ. Paul describes that part of this armor is to “Take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, praying….”

Therefore to help us for this war, I just wanted to stir you up to faith-filled prayers with a few quotes:

“There has never been a spiritual awakening in any country or locality that did not begin in united prayer.” – A. T. Pierson

“The evangelization of the world depends first of all upon a revival of prayer. Deeper than the need for men – aye, deep down at the bottom of our spiritless life, is the need for the forgotten secret of prevailing, world-wide prayer.” – Andrew Murray

“He who knows how to overcome with God in prayer has heaven and earth at his disposal.” – C. H. Spurgeon

“We cannot all argue, but we can all pray; we cannot all be leaders, but we can all be pleaders; we cannot all be mighty in rhetoric, but we can all be prevalent in prayer.  I would sooner see you eloquent with God than with men.” – C. H. Spurgeon

“I’d rather be able to pray than be a great preacher; Jesus Christ never taught his disciples how to preach but only how to pray.  Boy do we have this messed up in modern evangelism and ministry…God help us to learn from this profound truth!” – D.L. Moody

“When God has something very great to accomplish for His church, it is His will that there should precede it, the extraordinary prayers of His people; as is manifest by Ezek. 36, 37, together with the context. And it is revealed that when God is about to accomplish great things for His Church, He will begin by remarkably pouring out the spirit of grace and supplication (Zach. 12:10). …I should think the people of God in this land would be in the way of their duty to do three times as much fasting and prayer as they do” – Jonathan Edwards

“The one concern of the devil is to keep Christians from praying. He fears nothing from prayerless studies, prayerless work and prayerless religion. He laughs at our toil, mocks at our wisdom, but trembles when we pray.” – Samuel Chadwick

“The primary issue in prayer is not obtaining what we want but allowing God to display His glory. If we receive what we want, that is really just a bonus. The eternal benefit of prayer is that it magnifies God’s glory. That is why we know we will receive from Him what is best for us and what glorifies Him most. Our faith in God’s power will increase as we see Him work.”  – John MacArthur

“Evening, and morning, and at noon, will I pray, and cry aloud, and He shall hear me.”- David, Psalm 55:17

May we all be pushed to pray by these praying men.  I am praying that those who read would take God’s word and pray it. I believe our hearts will find joy, strength, boldness, and wisdom as we commune with God through his word in the face of difficulty and until we see Jesus’ face.

Loving His Appearing with you and praying his word until he comes.
